Turtle Nests

After another quiet, uneventful night on the beach I spent the morning being involved in the excavation of the nest. A nice crowd of visitors were on hand as the NPS biologist opened the nest up. To our surprise and the crowds delight there were a number of live hatchlings present inside the nest. I actually left before the excavation was completed but by that time the NPS has successfully rescued 6 live hatchlings. The crowd was thrilled and it was nice to see a pleasant outcome to all our long hours. As the nesting season is coming to a close the NPS is busy enclosing another 9 nests today. Those nests are strung out from Ocracoke to Salvo so I won't be involved with those nests. I'm in retirement mode until next year.
