Different Players, Same Old Game

I watched a discussion last night on C-span that sought to identify the US role in the world. The panel consisted of Karl Rove, Jeb Bush, Max Cleland and Gen. Barry McCaffrey.

First, I questioned the panel.
Cleland, a former Senator, had voted for the Iraq war and spent a portion of his time trying to validate his vote.
Jeb Bush, former governor, must be attempting to show the public his grasp of foreign relations.
Karl Rove, what can you say? Tirelessly promoting the same old line. Why does anyone listen to him?
General Barry McCaffrey (retired) was the only person making any sense and he was drown out by his opposition.

Before I turned the panel off in disgust, here is my take.
All, except McCaffrey, continually promoted the concept of exporting democracy to every corner of the earth. If their vision was followed, the US would have it's footprint everywhere from Darfur to Cuba. Although they understood the necessity of military intervention in some of these undertakings, they had no answer, nor possible suggestion, on how our military would accomplish the task. McCaffrey continually sought to make the point that our military has reached the critical stage and is close to being broken. His argument fell on deaf ears.

Before I left in disgust, I completely understood the fact that the Washington establishment has empire building, under the guise of spreading democracy, deeply entrenched in their minds. Although the American public repeatedly says concentrate on our own problems, Washington sees things differently and is determined to have their way.

This is the problem that is so apparent in our current slate of presidential candidates. They have all joined the club of the Washington intelligentsia(?) and KNOW what is best for America and the American people. All of our foreign affair failures since WW11 have made no impression on these folks. I'm sincerely concerned that unless we elect fresh blood, with fresh ideas, we will end up with more of the same failed policy.
