Outer Banks Outer Banks Real Estate

Corolla Real Estate - pronounced Cor-AH-lah originally described Corolla Village, but is now used to describe the entire barrier spit of the Currituck Outer Banks. Reflective of its Native American heritage, Currituck is a derivation of a Native American word meaning "land of the wild goose." Fairly desolate until 1984, Corolla has seen a building boom and now offers luxury homes and amenities to the vacationer. I'll be happy to introduce you to Corolla and the real estate opportunities it offers.

Duck Real Estate - incorporated in 2002, Duck is just south of Corolla, but still on the northern Outer Banks. Named for the abundance of migrating waterfowl; graceful wading birds, osprey and geese and duck are still plentiful. A mix of the old and new, Duck offers beautiful rental homes mingled with the charm of a small rural village. Shops, restaurants and miles of peaceful ocean beaches await your visit. I'll be happy to introduce you to Duck and the real estate opportunities it offers.

Southern Shores Real Estate - the town of Southern Shores was incorporated in 1979. Encompassing an area of 1 mile by 4 miles, this town is just south of Duck and adjacent to Kitty Hawk. Southern Shores maintains a low-key image by not allowing any large commercial establishments within the town. A mix of residential homes and vacation rental homes, this town has managed to retain its relaxed atmosphere. Just give me a call and I'll be happy to help you find the perfect home in this town.

Kitty Hawk Real Estate - a couple of different versions exist on this name. Some say the local's name for the ever-present dragonflies "Skeeter Hawk" was further twisted by island brogue (which has since disappeared) to sound like Kitty Hawk. Others say this is the closest English pronunciation of the Indians term for this land "Chickahauk" meaning goose hunting grounds. In any case, known today as the place of first powered flight, this in itself is an error as the flight actually took place some 4 miles away in Kill Devil Hills. Kitty Hawk now offers an abundance of shops, restaurants and rental homes. I'll be happy to help you explore all Kitty Hawk has to offer, just give me a call.

Kill Devil Hills Real Estate - incorporated in 1953 with approximately 6,800 residents this is one of the larger towns on the Outer Banks. According to legend, the name came from local rum so powerful that it would kill the devil. This town, lying between Kitty Hawk and Nags Head, offers chain restaurants and local eateries, movie theaters and an abundance of rental homes mixed with local residential properties. I'll be happy to explore Kill Devil Hills for your perfect vacation home or residential property.

Nags Head Real Estate - at first simply a physical location on a map and then a township, by 1830 Nags Head had become a plush resort destination and continues in the same fashion today. History again is unable to give a true version of the name of this town. It may have come across the sea with early English explorers, who were reminded of a similar location on the English coast, a high point on the Scilly Islands, the last point of land the early explores were to see before sighting the new world. A more romantic version is that 18th century "Bankers" recognizing how profitable pirating was for scoundrels like Blackbeard, developed their own version of land piracy. By tying lanterns around horse's necks and walking them up and down the beaches, they were able to lure many ships too close to the beach. As the ships broke up in the surf, these land-based pirates would pillage their cargo. In any case, Nags Head offers something for everyone with wonderful restaurants, shops and housing. Be sure to try Tortugas Lie, a local surfers restaurant, on the beach road for wonderful Caribbean fare. I'll be happy to explore Hags Head with you to assist you in finding your perfect home.

Manteo Real Estate - located on Roanoke Island, the town wraps around Shallowbag Bay. Founded in 1899, the town is named after one of the Native Americans who helped the original settlers. A mix of old and new the town maintains its small town feel. The Lost Colony, America's longest running outdoor drama, recreates the historic colony of settlers who disappeared in the late 1500's. A charming town on the waterfront, Manteo offers something for everyone. I'll be happy to help you explore Manteo, just give me a call.

The Tri-Village Area - Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo

Rodanthe Real Estate - pronounced Ro-DAN-thE no one seems to remember exactly where the name comes from. However, this area was originally called Chicamacomico, an Algonquin word meaning, " sinking down sand". In 1874 when a U.S. Lifesaving station was established here it was named Chicamacomico, but a post office established here the same year was named Rodanthe. Originally called North and South Rodanthe, eventually South Rodanthe was renamed Waves. The northernmost village on Hatteras Island, this area has been seen extensive building in the past several years and now offers beautiful rental homes with all the modern amenities. Let me know if I can assist you in locating your dream property in Rodanthe.

Waves Real Estate - the trip from Rodanthe to Waves is surprisingly easy as the two villages exist next to each other and no signs delineate the boundaries. Other historic names for this area are South Chicamacomico, South Rodanthe and Southern Woods. Waves, like it's northern neighbor, has experienced a building boom in the past several years and likewise offers beautiful homes that include all creature comforts. I'll be happy to introduce you to all that Waves has to offer, just give me a call.

Salvo Real Estate - again an easy drive from Waves to Salvo as there are no boundary markers and the villages just slide into each other. Originally known as Clarks or Clarksville, the village was renamed Salvo in 1901 when the first post office opened here. It is said that a Union ship sailed by during the Civil War and the captain asked the name of the settlement. When told the settlement had no recognition on the Union charts, the captain said to give them a cannon salvo. The salvo occurred, the point was marked on the map and the name stuck. The 1901 post office was supposedly the smallest post office in the U.S. measuring only 8 X 13 ft. It can still be seen on the west side of Hwy. 12 as you pass through Salvo. Look sharp; again there are no defining boundaries between Waves and Salvo, so you'll never know your there until you've gone through it. Salvo, as with the rest of the tri-village area, has seen tremendous growth in the past several years and now offers every amenity for the serious vacationer. I'll be happy to introduce you to Salvo and it's potential, just give me a call.

Avon Real Estate - about 17 miles south on Hwy. 12 you'll enter Avon, historically known as Kinnakeet. Again we have the U.S. Postal Service to thank for the name change. The first post office was named Kinnakeet, but 10 years latter in 1883 the post office was renamed to Avon. There are really two Avon villages. The historic sound side village where some of the inhabitants are descendants of the old life saving families. Avon has since expanded to the ocean side and most of these properties are rental homes. Avon is really the hub of the island and offers movie theaters, restaurants and gift shops. Magnificent rental properties exist on both the ocean and sound side. Please let me know if I can assist you in locating your own piece of Avon.

Buxton Real Estate - a short drive further down Hwy. 12 and you will enter Buxton, home of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Originally called The Cape, again the name was changed to Buxton in 1882. Shops and restaurants are plentiful here and Buxton has also seen its share of building. I'll be happy to assist you in locating suitable property, just give me a call.

Frisco Real Estate - leaving Buxton heading south you will come into Frisco. Originally known as Trent, a post office was established in 1898, but was latter renamed to Frisco. Without much fanfare, this area is important as a historical area and the history of the Hatteras Native Americans is well researched here. Areas known locally as Indiantown and Kings Point lead some archaeologists to believe that as many as 5,000 natives once lived on the island. A mixture of residential homes and vacation properties offer something for everyone. Just give me a call to assist you in locating your own piece of Frisco.

Hatteras Real Estate - again traveling south on Hwy. 12 you will come into historic Hatteras village. Named after the Hatterask tribe, the village's first post office was established in 1858. For a while, Hatteras village was one of the busiest ports in the state, the main point-of-entry for cargo ships headed to the mainland. Today it boasts a large sport-fishing fleet, numerous stores and restaurants. Beautiful homes with all the newest amenities make Hatteras village a popular destination. I'll be happy to assist you in finding your perfect Hatteras village home, just give me a call.

Ocracoke Real Estate - a short ferry trip away lays peaceful, serene Ocracoke Island. It's original name of Indian heritage has evolved over several hundred years to the name we now call this island. Assessable only by ferry, pleasure craft or plane this island is approximately 17 miles long and only inhabited on its southern tip. The balance of the island is pristine and offers miles of open beach inhabited only by island ponies. The village is a true gem and time should certainly be made to explore all the inviting shops and side streets. I'll be happy to help you explore Ocracoke Island, just give me a call.
